Hip Hop & Climate Justice
What is Hip Hop & Climate Justice?
The Hip Hop & Climate Justice initiative focuses on engaging youth in the climate justice movement through different forms of hip hop. We have produced music videos to pressure our power holders and raise public awareness about the climate crisis and its impacts. We lead writing workshops for youth to imagine the type of world they want to live in, in the future, and be able to heal from climate change and all the issues it exacerbates.
Our Latest Creation:
“Uplifits and expands on the intersections of these various movements and struggles, and highlights the necessity of these different analyses, frameworks, and perspectives, in the fight to achieve environmental and climate justice.
1. Activates and engages artists in using their artistry to help engage people in the movement for collective liberation.
2. Serves as a sense of and opportunity to step into community, joy, and collective struggle and resistance. A lot of these topics can be physically, mentally, spiritually, and emotionally draining.
Throughout the process of creating the EP and zine, often we came to the conclusion that there is so much wrong in the world. It can be really easy to get stuck on that and numb yourself to the pain that comes with it, which only further separates you from the role you have in shaping your own conditions. We want this to be a resource that can alleviate or at least de-isolate you from this pain and responsibility, but also deepen your analysis and understand your own role and power in the struggle for justice and liberation.”
Our HH&CJ team is active in coordinating arts and cultural spaces, education, and pathways. If we encourage and curate cultural expression that advances the mission of our EJ campaigns and is rooted in ancestral memory, reciprocity, and regenerativity then we expect to uplift those most impacted by climate and environmental injustice because we will achieve rebuilt art & culture that combats oppressive systems and protects community power and self-determination.
